Founder & CEO, LifeShield

In 2024, my mother-in-law was diagnosed with stage 4 high-grade serous ovarian cancer. By the time they found it, it had already spread to her brain.

The hardest part wasn't the diagnosis. It was learning that the information to catch it earlier had always been there.

Her mother had died of cancer. Two of her sisters had been diagnosed and survived, both caught early through routine screening, but not because anyone recognized the hereditary pattern. A BRCA1 mutation was present in her family, and yet nobody had ever connected that history to her own risk, nobody had ever suggested she should be tested. The mutation was discovered only during her treatment workup, after the cancer had already reached stage 4 and spread to her brain.

That mutation may now be carried by my wife. By her siblings. By our daughter, who is still a toddler.

I spent weeks after her diagnosis trying to understand how this could happen. What I found was a systemic gap that has nothing to do with lack of information. Family history is collected, but not operationalized. It sits in intake forms, disconnected from the workflows that should trigger screening and genetic follow-up. A mother who died of cancer, two sisters who survived it, that information existed. But no one was responsible for doing anything about it.

My mother-in-law's cancer was not inevitable. It was missable. And the system missed it.

LifeShield exists to close that gap. We take what families already know about their history, match it against clinical criteria, and give people a clear path to screening before a diagnosis forces the question. No referrals, no dead ends, no family history left unexamined.

Background

Before LifeShield, Mehdi founded Alopeyk, one of Iran's largest on-demand logistics startups, scaling it to millions of transactions before relocating to Canada. He brings the same systems-thinking that built Alopeyk to the problem of hereditary cancer screening: find the gap between what the system collects and what it acts on, and build the infrastructure to close it.
